Malachite

Identification clues

Vivid light-and-dark green curves, eyes, and bands make this material immediately distinctive.

Malachite is a soft, acid-sensitive copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, usually green and often banded.

Do not soak or use acids. Avoid cutting dust, and wash hands after handling rough or dusty material.

Look a little closer

Follow one green band around the stone. Look for curved layers, rings and changes from light to dark green without scratching or applying chemicals.
